Essex jest hrabstwem niemetropolitarnym we wschodniej Anglii, graniczy z hrabstwami: Cambridgeshire i Suffolk od północy, Kent od południa, Hertfordshire od zachodu oraz z Miastem Londynem od południowego zachodu. Centrum regionu jest miasto Chelmsford.

Nazwa Essex pochodzi od nazwy "Królestwo Essexu" (Kingdom of Essex) albo od Kingdom of the East Seaxe, państwa założonego w około 500 roku w okolicach dwóch rzek: Tamizy i Lee.

Z powodu bliskiego położenia Londynu wiele z miast Essexu jest miastami sypialnymi stolicy Wielkiej Brytanii. Hrabstwo zajmuje powierzchnię 3.670 km² o ludności 1 324 000 mieszkańców, co daje gęstość zaludnienia 443 osoby/km².
